The company was founded by Henk Rogers with the initial goal of publishing his role-playing game The Black Onyx (1984). BPS soon became a Nintendo licensee with close connections to the chairman Hiroshi Yamauchi. BPS held close ties to Alexey Pajitnov and The Tetris Company.
